The Role of the Governors

The Governors, together with the Head Teacher, are the strategic leaders of the school and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education. The primary concern of each Governor is to ensure three core strategic functions:

• Clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school;
• Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its budget is well spent.

Working in close co-operation with the Head Teacher who is responsible for day-to-day management, Governors set the school's aims and policies and plan the school’s long-term future. The Governing Body meets regularly during term time and conducts monitoring visits during the school day. 

Types of Governor

• Co-opted Governors - Appointed by the Governing body by other members to represent community interests or to bring skills to the Board that enhance the governance of the school.
• Foundation Governors - Appointed by the school’s founding body, which in our case is the Diocese. Our school also has a second Foundation Governor who is linked to the Board of Trustees.
• Local Authority Governor - Nominated by the Local Authority and appointed by the Governing body
• Parent Governors - Elected by the parents of pupils at the school
• Staff Governor – A member of the school staff who is elected by their colleagues. The Head Teacher is also a governor, in an ex officio capacity.
