The Role of the Governors

The Governors, together with the Headteacher are the strategic leaders of the school and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education.
The primary concern of each Governor is to ensure three core strategic functions:

Working in close cooperation with the Headteacher who is responsible for day-to-day management, Governors set the school's aims and policies and plan the school’s long-term future. The full Governing Body meets each academic term.

Types of Governor

Co-opted Governor - Appointed by the Governing body by other members to represent community interests or to bring skills which would enhance the governance of the school.

Foundation Governor - Appointed by the schools founding body, which in most cases is the Diocese.

Local Authority Governor - Nominated by the Local Education Authority and appointed by the Governing body

Parent Governor - Elected by the parents of pupils at the school

Staff Governor - Members of the school staff who are elected by their colleagues. This includes the Head teacher in an ex officio capacity.

The Governing body has two committees which each meet each academic term:

Curriculum and Monitoring
The larger of the two committees is primarily focused on:

Additionally, the Governors on this committee have oversight for more specific educational aspects of the school’s life such as Safeguarding, SEN, and British Values etc.

The numerically smaller of the two committees is primarily focused on:

The Governors on this committee have oversight for more specific functions of the school’s life such as Pay and Performance of Staff, Health and Safety, Premises etc.

As required, the Governors from both committees form Working Parties to tackle specific tasks.
